Dumbbell Hang Clean

Pro Tip

To perform the dumbbell hang clean, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding the dumbbells at your sides with a braced core and a neutral grip. Hinge forward at your hips to lower the weights to just above your knees, keeping your back flat, then explosively drive your hips forward and rise onto your toes to launch the weights upward using lower-body power. As the dumbbells float up, violently shrug your shoulders, pull your torso down, and snap your elbows forward to catch the weights smoothly on the front of your shoulders, absorbing the impact in a partial squat before standing completely upright to finish the rep.

How To

  1. Setup: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding dumbbells at your sides with a neutral grip and a braced core.
  2. Hinge: Push your hips back and slightly bend your knees, sliding the dumbbells down to just above knee height while keeping a flat back.
  3. Drive: Explosively push through the floor and snap your hips forward to launch the dumbbells upward with lower-body power.
  4. Extension: Drive up until your hips, knees, and ankles are fully extended, rising momentarily onto your toes.
  5. Shrug: At the peak of your hip extension, violently shrug your shoulders toward your ears to transfer the momentum into the weights.
  6. Pull-Under: As the weights float up, bend your elbows and quickly pull your torso down underneath the dumbbells.
  7. Catch: Rotate your wrists to snap your elbows forward, catching the weights on your shoulders while softening the impact in a quarter-squat.
  8. Stand & Reset: Stand fully upright to complete the rep, then lower the weights to your sides under control to reset.
